Retrofit

Sash Style casement window

The renovation of historic and listed buildings can be very challenging especially when it comes to the sensitive conservation of the visual features of old facades. The challenge is even greater when there is the ambition to improve the comfort and energy-saving qualities of a building.

For those requiring new vertically sliding sash windows for old buildings, until now, only improved versions of traditional sash windows were available. However the air leakage from these, although substantially improved, is still far beyond that allowed in a Passive House.

We are very pleased to announce that the Mayville Community Centre won best retrofit earlier this week, in the UK Passivhaus Awards 2012. Congratulations to all involved.

Parsons & Whittley’s highly commendable Wimbish social housing scheme won the Domestic category and the winner of the Non Domestic category was Architype’s Oakmeadow Primary School. Full details of all shortlisted schemes can be found on the Passivhaus Trust website.

passivhaus components transform health and comfort in the retrofit of a London house

Our award winning social housing retrofit, carried out with Southern Housing under the Technology Strategy Board's Retrofit for the Future project, used passivhaus 'fabric-first' measures, together with a very efficient heat recovery ventilation unit. Monitoring of the house shows that it has been transformed from a cold house running with condensation and blighted by mould growth and asthmatic indoor conditions, to a house that has absolutely optimal indoor comfort and health conditions in winter and summer.

Green Build Awards Logo

We received two awards last night at the inaugural Greenbuild Awards in the Leisure Buildings category for our certified passivhaus retrofit of Mayville Community Centre and in the Domestic Retrofit category for one of our Retrofit for the Future projects, Passfield Drive.

Clean air inside a Passivhaus relieves symptoms of chronic lung disease

Tom and Louise are now enjoying the comfort of their new passivhaus-modelled retrofit. We have thoroughly insulated their home, fitted new windows, eliminated all draughts and fitted a heat recovery ventilation unit with pollen air filters. The work was funded by the Technology Strategy Board’s retrofit-for-the-future programme.

Mayville Community Centre Passivhaus

The Mayville Community Centre has been shortlisted in the 3R Awards Public Building category alongside Central Hall, Keighley (Hodson Architects) and The Octagon, Haringey (Mace).  The winners will be anounced at an awards ceremony on 10th November at The Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington.

Camden Passivhaus Monitoring

It has just been announced that two more of bere:architects’ projects have been awarded funding to undergo two years of research and monitoring as part of the Technology Strategy Board’s Building Performance Evaluation programme.

Paul Jennings of Aldas was on site on Friday to carry out the first air permeability test of the Mayville Community centre. Although a little later than expected, the building recorded a result of 0.53 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals (using the rigorous Attma standard 2007 methodology) – the first non-domestic retrofit result that we know of to reach the passivhaus requirement.
